1. _I_n_t_r_o_d_u_c_t_i_o_n
The IRIX(R) Interactive Desktop provides the interface that
is used in day-to-day operation of your system.
The IRIX Interactive Desktop has two parts: the Base package
and the Execution package. This set of release notes covers
the Base package. For details on the Execution package,
please refer to the Desktop Execution Environment
(ddddeeeesssskkkkttttoooopppp____eeeeooooeeee) release notes.
The ddddeeeesssskkkkttttoooopppp____ttttoooooooollllssss product contains a set of related desktop
applications including IconSmith, Jot, and the GL
screensavers. For more information, see the separate
Desktop Tools release notes.
The 4D Window Manager, which accompanies and is tightly
integrated with the IRIX Interactive Desktop environment, is
packaged in a separate product called 4444DDDDwwwwmmmm and has its own
release notes. 4Dwm provides features such as sssseeeessssssssiiiioooonnnn aaaannnndddd
bbbbaaaacccckkkkggggrrrroooouuuunnnndddd mmmmaaaannnnaaaaggggeeeemmmmeeeennnntttt. For details, please see the _4_D_w_m

1.1 _I_R_I_X__I_n_t_e_r_a_c_t_i_v_e__D_e_s_k_t_o_p__B_a_s_e__S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e
The IRIX Interactive Desktop Base Software package includes
the following components:
DDDDeeeesssskkkkttttoooopppp SSSShhhhaaaarrrreeeedddd LLLLiiiibbbbrrrraaaarrrriiiieeeessss This subsystem includes the desktop
base libraries required to run the IRIX Interactive
Desktop environment.
DDDDeeeesssskkkkttttoooopppp FFFFiiiilllleeeettttyyyyppppeeee RRRRuuuulllleeeessss The file typing rules are required in
order to have drag-and-drop icons on the Desktop.
This subsystem contains the icon pictures, the FTR
database _d_e_s_k_t_o_p._o_t_r used by the Desktop, and various
other tools: _f_f_t_r, _f_t_r_2_m_i_m_e, _i_s_S_u_p_e_r, and _d_r_o_p_m_a_i_l.
DDDDeeeesssskkkkttttoooopppp 6666....2222 IIIIccccoooonnnn LLLLiiiibbbbrrrraaaarrrriiiieeeessss This subsystem contains the old
6.2 icon library _l_i_b_d_e_s_k_t_o_p_F_i_l_e_i_c_o_n._s_o, used by some
old Desktop applications. This library provides the
API for the FTR database.

DDDDeeeesssskkkkttttoooopppp UUUUttttiiiilllliiiittttiiiieeeessss This subsystem includes the desktop
utilities _t_a_g and _i_c_o_n_c_a_t_a_l_o_g_e_d_i_t, needed for
integrating applications into the IRIX Interactive
Desktop.

1.3 _O_n_l_i_n_e__R_e_l_e_a_s_e__N_o_t_e_s
After you install the online release notes for a product
(the _r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s subsystem), you can view the release notes on
your screen.
Note: You can read the online release notes for most
products before installing the software. Refer to
the booklet in your CD-ROM case for more information.
If you have a graphics system, select Release Notes from the
Help submenu of the toolchest. This displays the
_g_r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) graphical browser for the online release notes.
Refer to the _g_r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) reference page for information on
options to this command.

If you do not have a graphics system, you can use the
_r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s command. Refer to the _r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) reference page
for accessing the online release notes.
